how to install discord

Discord is easy to install on Windows. Go to their website, download setup and run. You’re set. But on Linux… Well, for people who are new to Linux, contrary to popular belief, it’s not that hard. Of course it is for the beginners. In this article, we’re going to learn how to install Discord on Linux. More specifically, Mint OS as it is the best for newbies or casual Linux users(I use Mint btw).

Downloading Discord

I would highly recommend downloading Discord from official site only. This is because you cannot trust third party “Discord installer for Linux” who may simply have Discord and then some malicious program running behind your back to steal your credentials(not just Discord). You can simply go to Discord.com/download and download it.

Installing

Once Discord is installed, open your terminal. You can do so by going to Start Menu on bottom left of your screen(or Applications menu on top left) and opening Terminal. You can also search for “cmd” in app search and you will find Terminal.

When the terminal spawns, it will be at your home directory. Navigate to Downloads folder where Discord file has been downloaded.

cd ~/Downloads

The ~/ before Downloads will ensure you go to Downloads folder inside your home directory, where ~ indicates your home directory.

Now type ls in your terminal and it should look like this:

manal@gatoepico:~/Downloads$ ls
discord-0.0.100.deb

Now install it using the following command:

dpkg -i discord-0.0.100.deb

Replace that deb file with whatever Discord version you are installing at the time. You can see the previous example to find Discord file. You can also use file manager to find file name.

Once it is installed, the output should look like this:

manal@gatoepico:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i discord-0.0.100.deb
[sudo] password for manal:
(Reading database ... 740144 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack discord-0.0.100.deb ...
Unpacking discord (0.0.104) over (0.0.100) ...
Setting up discord (0.0.100) ...
Processing triggers for gnome-menus (3.36.0-1ubuntu3) ...
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.26+mint3+victoria) ...
Processing triggers for mailcap (3.70+nmu1ubuntu1) ...
manal@gatoepico:~/Downloads$

And it is done. You can now goto same start menu or application menu you used to start terminal and search for Discord. It will be right there. If you see any error or “File not found” kind of error, you have failed. Feel free to ask in comments down below if you face any issue.
